Survey Series: How Often Do You Drink Coffee?

We asked this simple question to regular Melbourne folk. Here’s what they had to say about their coffee drinking habits. The names that appear are fictitious.

Kylie: ‘I drink coffee every morning, every afternoon and every evening around dusk…I have a domestic coffee machine but when I’m out I’m never too far from a good café!

Greg: ‘…about 3 or 4 times a day. That’s quite a lot of coffee isn’t it? I think someone should buy me a coffee machine for Christmas…wouldn’t want to know how much money I spend on coffees every year!

Allan: ‘I have a cup of coffee made with freshly ground coffee beans in my own coffee machine every morning, and that’s it! I guess I drink coffee everyday, but I only drink coffee once a day, so you couldn’t really call me an addict, could you?’

Lisa: ‘I love coffee, but after the 3rd cup of coffee I order decaf! It’s not really coffee, but it still makes me feel as if I’m drinking coffee and that way I can sleep better at night. If coffee didn’t keep me up at night I’d probably never turn my coffee machine off because I love mixing coffee and different liqueurs.

Rob: ‘once a week…maybe! I guess I’m not a big coffee drinker. It’s strange I know because in Melbourne coffee is a household word, in fact most people I know have their own coffee machines…just not into it! Sorry!

The consensus

We spoke to 100 Melbournians in one day about their coffee drinking habits. Of those 100 people, 78 were coffee drinkers! What qualifies as a coffee drinker?

Someone who has at least one coffee every morning and beyond. Of those 78 people, 54 of them drank 2 cups of coffee a day or more and 38 of them drank at least 3 cups of coffee a day. Of the 54 coffee drinkers, almost 40 of them had their own coffee machines at home- one was in the process of purchasing a domestic coffee machine for his new kitchen! The other 14 people were sworn café frequenters, visiting the café at least twice a day to order coffee brewed with freshly ground coffee beans. Out of the almost 40 coffee machine owners, 25 owned automatic coffee machines and the rest were more hard core coffee drinkers; they owned their won manual coffee machines and grinders to match!

So there we go. Melbourne isn’t called the coffee drinking capital of Australia for nothing! Stay tuned for our next Survey series interview.
