How to make your coffee sing: Songs about my favourite thing

It’s true that there is just about no occasion in this world that coffee doesn’t go well with. Having said that, sometimes tea is more appropriate; but having said that it would have to be a rare moment that would convince me otherwise in terms of having one more for the road. When it comes to music – coffee is not the first thing that springs to mind, usually. This gave me the idea of hunting down songs to do with coffee, coffee drinking and perhaps even coffee machines.

It turns out that coffee and music are not as uncommon as I thought. When I imagine someone writing a song and the mindset they may need to be in to get into the zone, I could quite easily imagine them sipping a cup of coffee during the process. The thought of the actual act of drinking coffee finding its way into the song doesn’t quite appear so easily though. It requires a little bit more imagination.

Despite some personal obstacles that literally wanted to shut out thoughts of songwriters having nothing better to write songs about other than themselves drinking coffee, I decided to go on the search anyway. And I am so glad I did. Along my way I found some pearls. Some stones too, and even some diamonds. Here is my list:

  1. Coffee and TV – Blur
  2. One More Cup of Coffee – Bob Dylan
  3. Cup of Coffee- Bob Marley
  4. 409 In Your Coffee Maker – Green Day
  5. Coffee Club – Spandau Ballet
  6. One More Cup of Coffee – The White Stripes
  7. The Coffee Song – Cream
  8. A Cup of Coffee – Johnny Cash
  9. Coffee Homeground – Kate Bush
  10. The Coffee Song – Frank Sinatra

So there you have it – my short list of favourite songs that sing about my favourite thing – coffee. And what better way to start a day than with a cup of coffee while great music plays away in the background. Once I finished my list I put it down and took a happy sigh. But then those itchy feelings came back again – the ones that worked away at my head trying to convince me that writing songs about coffee is perhaps one of the lamest things in the world to spend your time doing…

This led me to my next step – lyric analysis! Yes, I did. I analysed the lyrics of my favourite coffee songs. And the result was honestly quite pleasing to the ears, mind and heart. After careful listening and then re-listening, I found that these songs were not that lame after all. They all had a kind of deep soul to them that matched completely with the way I felt about coffee…the darkness that is just there, unquestioningly and unassumingly.

I decided to choose one song whose lyrics I would share just to prove my pint. I chose Blur – not a hard choice given I had a soft spot for the band that lasted many years. So here it is, for you to see for yourselves –that coffee and music can sometimes be the perfect combination!

Coffee and TV

Do you feel like a chain store
Practically floored
One of many zeros
Kicked around, bored?

Your ears are full but you’re empty
Holding out your heart
To people who never really
Care how you are

So, give me coffee and TV, history
I’ve seen so much
I’m goin’ blind
And I’m brain-dead virtually

Sociability, it’s hard enough for me
Take me away from this big bad world
And agree to marry me
So we could start over again

Do you go to the country?
It isn’t very far
There’s people there who will hurt you
‘Cause of who you are

Your ears are full of the language
There’s wisdom there, you’re sure
‘Til the words start slurring
And you can’t find the door

So, give me coffee and TV, history
I’ve seen so much
I’m goin’ blind
And I’m brain-dead virtually

Sociability, it’s hard enough for me
Take me away from this big bad world
And agree to marry me
So we could start over again

So, give me coffee and TV, history
I’ve seen so much
I’m goin’ blind
And I’m brain-dead virtually

Sociability, it’s hard enough for me
Take me away from this big bad world
And agree to marry me
So we could start over again

Oh, we could start over again
Oh, we could start over again
Oh, we could start over again
Oh, we could start over again

Enjoy people!
