Called a pad in non-English speaking countries, the coffee pod as we know it was modelled on the tea bag. Acting as a coffee bag, its gauze allows instant coffee to infuse. The result is an instant coffee that tastes a little less instant than the bottled kind.
Many insist that the lack of mess and the ease of measurement is worth the sacrifice of fresh coffee beans but we simply do not agree. We in turn insist that if you are going to use a coffee machine at all to make your coffee it better be the best coffee you can make without going to the café. Pods simply don’t cut it for us.
If you are a small or large office, the cost of pods add up. Even though most pod companies offer you the pod machine for free with minimum orders of pods each month, we have done the maths and renting or owning an automatic coffee machine is far more economical. On top of this, automatic office coffee machines do not skimp on the quality of fresh ground coffee beans for a little less mess in the kitchen. In fact, automatic coffee machines are self-cleaning. All that is required is the emptying of the dregs tray once a day or so, and the refilling of the bean hopper. We believe that wiping down a bench top once or twice a day is hardly a price to pay for great, fresh coffee.
We have worked out that having a pod machine in your office can more than double your costs. Each kilo of coffee beans uses 7grams of ground coffee to make each cup of coffee. This means that each kilo of coffee will produce 140 cups of fresh coffee using an automatic coffee machine. If you pay between 50 cents and $1 per pod, it would cost your office up to $140 to make 140 cups of coffee with a pod machine…think about it!
If your office or your household is serious about coffee but does not like mess then an automatic coffee machine is the way to go. When a lot of people consider a coffee machine they picture the enormous manual coffee machines they see in cafes daily or weekly, with a burr grinder alongside. These manual coffee machines do make a lot of mess, admittedly – but for a good cause! However, automatic coffee machines are much more user-friendly and low maintenance. They require the minimum amount of attention and effort in order to make an excellent cup of coffee using fresh beans.
Pods simply cannot compete with the freshness of coffee beans. Pods arrive in a box usually. How do you know how long they have been sitting there or where they came from? When you buy our fresh coffee beans for your automatic coffee machine you are buying quality and freshness guaranteed. Our beans are roasted locally, daily! We sell too much coffee to keep it stored for more than two weeks, which is the standard suggested time to keep coffee beans. How do you know when the beans that were pre-ground for your coffee pod were actually roasted? You don’t.
We obviously prefer automatic coffee machines, otherwise we would have sourced a coffee pod machine to rent or sell to our customers a long time ago. We have done our research and homework about coffee pods. We hope you read this article and make your own decision when comparing the costs and quality of fresh coffee beans using an automatic coffee machine and coffee pods.
